Immigration, visas and permits
Covers: South Africa · Zimbabwe
Immigration outcomes turn on paperwork and deadlines. Most refusals are procedural — an expired supporting document, a missing certified translation or a late appeal. Get the file right before you submit.
What you need
- Valid passport with sufficient remaining validity and blank pages
- Police clearance certificates for every country of long residence
- Medical and radiological reports where required
- Proof of the ground you rely on: employment contract, acceptance letter, marriage certificate or proof of funds
- Certified copies and sworn translations of foreign documents
Step by step
- 1
Identify the correct category
Applying under the wrong visa category is the most expensive mistake — it usually means starting again.
- 2
Assemble supporting documents
Every document must still be valid on the date of submission, not the date you collected it.
- 3
Book and submit
In South Africa, most applications are submitted through VFS Global on behalf of Home Affairs. Zimbabwean applications go through the Department of Immigration.
- 4
Track the outcome
Keep your receipt and tracking number. Collection is usually in person at the same centre.
- 5
Appeal or reapply within the deadline
Rejections carry a short appeal window. Missing it converts a fixable problem into a new application.
If you are refused
A refusal letter states a reason and a deadline. Your appeal must answer that specific reason with evidence — not restate the original application.
- Diarise the appeal deadline immediately
- Address each stated ground separately
- Attach the new evidence that cures the defect
